New Op-Ed: Trigger-Happy Policing is Killing Pets
Advancing Law for Animals co-founder and co-director Vanessa Shakib published a new op-ed in the Los Angeles Daily News examining a troubling and often overlooked consequence of police encounters: the killing of family pets.
In “Trigger-happy policing is killing pets — and costing taxpayers,” Shakib argues that when law enforcement officers unnecessarily kill companion animals, the harm extends beyond the animal who dies. Families are left grieving, while taxpayers can ultimately bear the financial cost of resulting litigation and settlements.
The piece calls for greater accountability and better policing practices to prevent needless deaths and recognize what millions of families already know: companion animals are beloved members of the family.
