Over three years since filing Cedar's case, we have a historic win, a painful setback, and a legal battle ahead.
✨ The historic victory.
Advancing Law for Animals secured a $300,000 settlement from Shasta County — the largest on record for the illegal slaughter of a farmed animal. This was an unprecedented acknowledgment that what happened to Cedar was wrong, kicking up another round of major media coverage, including The Washington Post, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Guardian, USAToday, and more.
⚖️ Where we are now.
The remaining defendants — the California state fair, its employees, and a 4-H volunteer — filed motions to kick our case out of court. After months of briefing and arguing, the judge granted them qualified immunity and ruled against our motion for summary judgment. In other words: the court saw their wrongdoing but still shielded them from accountability.
💪 We’re not backing down.
We've taken this case to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. This is our chance to fix qualified immunity and continue to fight for animals whose lives are treated as disposable.
This case is about Cedar — but it’s also about every animal whose suffering is swept aside. With your help, we’ve already made history. And with your continued support, we can keep going.
